Kieta, Bougainville was once the pearl of PNG until 1988 when seccessionist war broke out. The local economy is still largely in tatters and a lot of the infrastructure destroyed during the fighting and is in the process of reconstruction.

Kieta port is still in excellent shape with major exports being copra establishing again.
